T H E W R O N G F I T Fix It or Flee
Presentations, Seminars, and Workshops
I rarely return any purchase. Why? I make sure that it is the Right Fit for me when I purchase it. When I work with employers, I caution them that they cannot return a placed candidate to me, as if that person is a can of tuna. It is, however, customary in the world of executive search to permit the employer to ask a search firm to replace a candidate, if the fit does not work out. Employers who are accustomed to working with search firms always ask for a replacement guarantee period, seeking as much time as possible to determine whether the fit is right. The point is that employers frequently hire Wrong Fits for many different reasons. The question is what to do if you’ve hired the Wrong Fit?
Options
» Fix the Wrong Fit? » Fire the Wrong Fit? » Hire again to replace the Wrong Fit? » Rethink the position? » Forget it and flee?
What happens if the employer hires the Right Fits who suddenly become the Wrong Fits? You are probably saying, how could this happen? Very easily.
Here’s one scenario. Top management changes and suddenly decides that the Right Fit employees are now Wrong Fits. Do you fire all of these people or are there other solutions?

Let’s look at how the candidate enters the realm of the Wrong Fit. » Selects a Wrong Fit position expecting it to be the Right Fit. » Takes a Wrong Fit job for whatever reason. » Accepts a Right Fit position that turns sour.
The question is, what to do? » Fix the Wrong Fit. » Walk out the door. » Start looking for another job. » Stay until you find a new position.
